Reflecting recently on my progress as a professional coach, I alighted on one of life’s underappreciated qualities: worrying.
Worrying has helped get me where I am today. In case it’s useful to others, here are my top tips for success:
- Starting out: worry no one will want to be coached by you.
- After initial volunteers: worry no one will pay to be coached by you
- After first paid client: assume it was luck and you won’t get a second
- After second paid client: worry they’ll never come back
- After client renewal: worry about their rising expectations
- After first few rejections: worry you’re overcharging
- After first few acceptances: worry you’re undercharging
- After first referral: worry word-of-mouth works too slowly
- After 5th referral: worry word is spreading too fast
- After first few paid clients: worry you won’t get enough work
- After first 10 paying clients: worry you’ll be overworked
The conclusion, I think you’ll agree, is self-evident: the key to success is constant and limitless worrying. Er, I think. Wait….
