Wisdom isn't Clever

My mum often said there's a big difference between intelligence and wisdom.
At the time I didn't get it. It was well-meaning advice, but unhelpful and probably wrong.
What did she know anyway? After all, I had 18 years of education and two degrees. All she had was the barest of schooling, a husband and lots of children (21 of them).
And yet, over the decades, it stayed with me. Today, with a sense of wonder, I look back and realise - of course - she was right. Over time, she becomes ever more right.
I see it in my own experiences and those of my clients. The biggest reason people get stuck is that they're applying intelligence to a wisdom problem. And that's the problem.
Intelligence recycles, wisdom creates.
For some time I've felt what we need is more leaders who can lead from wisdom. Now I feel that what we really need is more leaders who can help their people access their own wisdom.
So mum, if you're able to hear this: thank you. I get it now. 🙏 ❤️
